They used their vast combined power to rewrite the world's understanding of history, changing humanity's relationship with magic. In the new world they created, while humans sometimes gained magic powers as children, they had to sacrifice that power once they turned 18 in order to let the next wave of kids use it for their own magical awakenings. In the intervening years, usually around age 12 to age 18, they had to fight Thaumivores, magic-devouring monsters threatening humanity from realms unknown. These magical boys and girls suffered and sometimes died facing these creatures, but it was a tragic necessity of the world.

In reality, nearly all of that is a lie. Magic awakenings are a natural process that requires no sacrifice from others to occur. The magic sacrificed by 18-year-old magi was instead being secretly hoarded by the Hand, increasing their already immense power. Using this nearly bottomless stockpile of magical power, they made themselves immortal, and ruled society from the shadows for 300 years. The reason Thaumivores came to Earth was because of the massive magic stockpiles the Hand accumulated over centuries. However, their secret stranglehold on the planet wasn't perfect, and wouldn't last forever. In secret, an organization of young adults called Lighthouse arose - magi who went rogue, refusing to give up their powers and fighting against the Hand.

History:
Faith got her powers at age 12, and was assigned as one of two magical girls working together to protect her hometown in Florida. The other was a girl of the same age named Michelle, full of sunshine and rainbows, and for a while they fought together and almost dated. Instead, however, Michelle was killed by a Thaumivore at age 14, leaving Faith devastated and alone.

Faith threw herself into battle, quieting the despair inside her by recklessly hunting more and more dangerous monsters with no regard to her own life. What this got her was a severed leg and a few weeks of downtime to get used to it before she was expected to continue fighting. With absolutely no hope left, she returned to battle caring for nothing but the notion that her fight might end when she turned 18. That was when Lighthouse found her.

Marco, the founder of Lighthouse, contacted Faith and revealed the true shape of the world to her. Overwhelmed with rage at the fact that Michelle had died for a lie, she joined them, dedicating her life to hunting down and killing the secret masters of the Hand of Providence - the nine survivors out of the original ten magi who founded it in the 18th century. Their path to the Hand came in the form of Darkest Night - an underground event carried out once a year on the winter solstice where the Hand would kidnap a dozen magi and force them to fight each other to the death for their own entertainment, gambling magic crystals on the outcome. Faith allowed herself to be captured as a participant, but with Marco's portal abilities, they were able to use her to slip all of Lighthouse into the arena, break out, and fight the Hand directly.

The battle between Lighthouse and the Hand of Providence was desperate and perilous, but in the end, Lighthouse won. All nine of the Hand's leaders were killed, and they emerged with proof of the organization's existence and nefarious plans. The Hand's power structure was shattered, turning from a world-spanning conspiracy into weak, broken shards, squabbling desperately for what power they could still grab for themselves while the world hunted them down. Faith retired from the fight at this point, letting others carry on the flame she and Lighthouse lit while she returned to a normal life.

Personality: Tell us about your character! Let us know them as well as you do.
Faith is an angry cynical delinquent with PTSD. Life dealt her a series of awful hands, and she thought she was just massively unlucky until she found out that the dealer had been stacking the deck against her the whole time. The discovery of the Hand burned a permanent mistrust of authority figures into her, even beyond that specific instance of it. If you tell Faith not to do something, it makes her more likely to do it, just because she was told not to. If anyone claims to be acting in your best interest, they have an agenda. The pessimism runs deep; after years of suffering, she struggles to ever believe that something good is going to happen. Why would anything good ever happen?

While someone else might come out of that depressed, Faith got mad. Faith's anger is intense and productive. When she gets angry, she gets focused, turning her hostility into energy to put towards dealing with a problem. To this end, she's at her best when she has a problem that can be bashed out head-on. The pointless cruelty of the world left Faith feeling lost and hopeless, but as soon as she learned that it was someone's fault, all her energy returned. An evil conspiracy is something she can dotoo close to anyone - it's ultimately why her first relationship after Darkest Night didn't last long. On an unconscious level, she's still afraid that if she lets herself truly love someone, they'll be taken away from her again.

Sin:
Wrath: Faith is characterized by anger. When she's wronged, righteous fury is what drives her to action. When there's nothing left for her to fight, she finds something else to fight.

Sloth: After losing Michelle and her leg, Faith gave up. She continued to do her job as described, but essentially nothing else. All she wanted was to kill time until her 18th birthday came and she could stop fighting.

Envy: In her darkest days, Faith came to hate ordinary people. Those who got to live their lives without having to fight to survive became insufferable. She hated them because they had what she thought she never could.

Executor Title: Fury

Memoria:

The Nature of Magic. The propaganda about how magic works. When you awaken to your powers, you're given a familiar to guide you and assigned a territory to protect from Thaumivores. You fight to protect the innocent until your 18th birthday, then give up your powers, returning your magic to the Earth so that someone else may use it to fight in your place.

The Day I Became a Mage. Faith's own powers awaken, granting her control over inertia. She's assigned her hometown as a territory, to be shared with another girl about her age. Their careers begin, as Moonlight Glory and Sunshine Violet.

Michelle. Faith's loyal partner in magic. For two years, she was transfixed by Michelle's cheer and positivity. She wouldn't realize until later that what she was feeling was love.

Her Name is Lily. Faith's idol, a powerful magical girl who began fighting at a very young age. The specific memory was of the time Lily saved her from a Thaumivore that was too strong for her to take on at her level of experience.

Dusk. The light that lit Faith's life goes out. In a fight against a powerful, shape-shifting Thaumivore, Michelle sacrifices herself to save Faith's life.

Rock Bottom. Faith awakens in a hospital after a particularly bloody fight, to find that her right leg has been amputated below the knee. Just one more thing to sacrifice to the endless fight against the Thaumivores.

The Hand of Providence. The true orchestrators of Faith's tragedy. Nine men created this cruel world, and they alone profit from it, sacrificing children at the altar of greed. Faith learned of their existence, and her despair became rage.

Welcome to Lighthouse. Marco recruited Faith to join Lighthouse, a secret undercover group dedicated to destroying the Hand. She accepted, killed her familiar, and went rogue. She had an enemy, and now she had the support she needed to reach them.

New Friends. Lighthouse was full of other magi from different backgrounds, united only by their hatred of the Hand. Marco, the leader who was once an idol. Lily, who Faith looked up to, but who had grown up knowing nothing but the fight. Jailbreak, an orphan who could always be counted on to do something extremely reckless and stupid that somehow works out. Maddie, the blind mage with a desperate need to prove herself. And more.

Darkest Night. Lighthouse's final mission. Faith secretly infiltrated the cruel battle royale as a participant, but allowed the rest of Lighthouse to sneak in with her. Together, they challenged the Hand at their seat of power. However, they were powerful beyond imagination - was there ever any hope of winning against such might?

Dawn. The remainder of that night. All nine members of the Hand were killed. All members of Lighthouse survived. A total victory by the children once crushed beneath the Hand's tyranny.

Faith. Her real name.

The Day After. In the aftermath of Darkest Night, Lighthouse spread awareness of the conspiracy's existence, leading the world to hunt down and expose the fractured cells remaining around the world. Faith continued to fight these remnants for some time, in battles that were lower stakes than Darkest Night but still dangerous.

A Normal Life. Eventually, Marco convinced Faith to retire from the fight and return to civilian life. She put down her axe, mostly for good, and went to college. Got a girlfriend, but they broke up after about half a year. Normal problems for a hard-earned normal future.

Extra: I'm already in the game - upon acceptance of this app, please consider Zoe/Iris to be dropped.

comments

FAITH FALLON

♦ VISUAL: 5'4", age 19, caucasian, brown eyes, brown hair in a short bob with messy bangs. Usually wearing glasses, unless she's doing something where she might get punched in the face. Fashion tends towards simple - blank t-shirts, skirts and shorts, although for some reason she also has a green tanktop that just says "ñ" on it. Her right leg is severed just below the knee - replacing it is a prosthetic leg made out of an unidentified black metal. It isn't particularly made to look like a real leg, just to let her walk without too much trouble.
♦ AUDITORY: Faith mutters a lot. Her voice is a bit lower than you might expect, and she almost always sounds like she's being a little sarcastic. When she gets angry, her speech becomes much clearer, and also much louder.
♦ PSYCHIC: Faith's train of thought is deeply pessimistic and cynical. She's always expecting the worst out of situations and people, but the frustration from those gears grinding is a big part of what drives her. She's constantly stressed, and if you dig deeper, there's a big wad of PTSD at the center of it.
♦ MAGICAL: Faith is a mage, of the 'magical girl' variety. When she's walking around normally, her magical power can be sensed, but it's very faint - the majority of it is being sealed inside her. Depending on the magic system it might parse as non-elemental, spatial, gravity-based, or enchantment. Her false leg is a low-level magic item, and faintly radiates magic energy accordingly.
♦ MEDICAL: Well, her leg's gone, that's medically speaking not great. She has a custom-made prosthetic (it comes when called) that she wears most of the time, and uses crutches to get around when she doesn't want to go through the trouble of putting it on. Leg aside, though, Faith is in good shape. She swims daily for physical therapy, and has the body of an aspiring athlete. As someone who has been fighting since childhood, she has picked up a few scars, although not as many as one might think due to the availability of healing magic. Her left leg has been broken in the past year. Pretty severely farsighted if she doesn't have her glasses.

MOONLIGHT GLORY

♦ VISUAL: It's still Faith wearing the costume, but the magic of the transformation makes it difficult for the brain to make the connection between them unprompted. The only obvious physical difference is her choce of clothing - a frilly knee-length purple dress with black edges and black ribbons decorating it. She wields a massive battleaxe with one or both hands, not apparently troubled by its weight at all. The axe's blade seems like it's made of light about as much as it seems like it's made of metal.
♦ AUDITORY: No change from above.
♦ PSYCHIC: The fundamental psyche is the same as when she isn't transformed, but as Moonlight Glory she's more focused and less pessimistic - she has the tools to deal with her problems in this form, even if only through violence. Her anger is also sharper and closer to the surface.
♦ MAGICAL: The same faint power detectible from Faith is in full force in Moonlight Glory, as it is no longer being suppressed. When she's trasnformed, her power is far above what you'd expect from a human. The axe she wields is made entirely out of magical energy, less a magic item and more a spell itself. Her ability lets her manipulate her personal inertia, accelerating and decelerating at speeds that shouldn't be physically possible.
♦ MEDICAL: Theoretically the same body as above, but due to magical enhancement, her strength and speed exceed what her physical muscles should be capable of, and she's highly resistant to mundane injury.

comments

Light skin, dark brown hair, athletic physique. Either seen in jeans/shorts and plain t-shirts or in a purple and black goth magical girl outfit. Her right leg is missing from just below the knee, and has been replaced by a black prosthetic.

About the Character:
Faith grew up in Florida, idolizing the magical girls and boys called 'mages' - young heroes who fought monsters for the sake of mankind. She was twelve when she awakened to her own powers, jumping at the chance to become a mage herself. She teamed up with a girl named Michelle, and for two years, they had fun adventures, saving the day and growing close to each other. Faith was a shy, quiet but hardworking kid, but Michelle's cheerful enthusiasm proved deeply infections, and it eventually began to drag her out of her shell. Then, Michelle died.

While fighting a monster beyond their abilities, Michelle used her body to block an attack that otherwise would have killed Faith. Faith survived, but her idealistic view of the world of magi was shattered - what once looked like fun and exciting adventures now looked like a trial of cruel battles that she had to face alone. The unfairness of Michelle's death was just a symptom of an unfair world from which the only escape was to fight and survive. She continued fighting on her own, increasingly recklessly, until one of her battles left her in critical condition and her right leg was lost from the knee down. During her recovery, she had a lot of time to think about her life, and the conclusion she came to was that nothing she was doing mattered. The monsters would keep coming, and magi would keep suffering and dying, forever.

Faith was just a few weeks away from turning 18 when her worldview shifted again. When magi turn 18, they offer up their powers so that magic will continue to exist for a new generation of magi. However, she met with a rogue mage named Marco who told her about the true nature of the world - everything she had been taught about magic was a lie. Magic was a renewable resource, and didn't need to be given up for future magi to awaken to their powers. The only reason that the cycle of children fighting and surrendering their powers existed was because the power they lost was being hoarded by a centuries-old conspiracy of magi called the Hand of Providence. The more magi fought and suffered, the more the Hand's power increased, and the more their growing hoard of magical power drew montsers to Earth. In other words, everything she had accepted as being an inescapable part of a fundamentally cruel world was being orchestrated deliberately.

Her initial reaction to this revelation was a refusal to believe it, because if it was true, then it would mean that Michelle had died for nothing. However, when evidence mounted, denial turned to rage, and she dedicated herself to the Hand's destruction. She joined Marco in a group of rebel magi called Lighthouse, and turned her anger into the strength needed to hunt down and destroy the Hand. Her new war came to a climax at a horrifying event called Darkest Night, where the strongest and oldest magi of the Hand gathered to pit abducted young magi against each other in a lethal battle royale, betting on the outcome. Lighthouse infiltrated it as contestants, then exposed the existence of the Hand to the world and killed most of their leadership.

With the Hand's masters dispatched, the organization was thrown into chaos. It fragmented into smaller splinter groups as various members tried to claim the empty thrones, but they no longer controlled the world from the shadows - the fact that their existence was now public knowledge meant that their scheme to steal the power of younger generations could no longer continue. Groups of magi rose up around the world to find and wipe out the remnants of the Hand, paving the way for a peaceful future. Faith joined them at first, but when her increasing anger and recklessness almost got her killed again, Marco assured her that the fight against the Hand was in good hands, and that she didn't need to keep pushing herself. Acknowledging that Michelle would have wanted her to have a happy, peaceful life, Faith relented, and her part in the story ended, and she retired as a mage. Catching up on the childhood she was robbed of, she became an ordinary college student, but remained ready to return to the fight if she was needed again.

One year later, Faith is just starting to re-adapt to civilian life. Her childhood was characterized by trauma and her more recent past by rage - rage against the Hand of Providence, rage against the injustices that she suffered. That anger drives Faith forwards as a source of strength, accomplishing her goals out of sheer spite against the world, but it can also make her a threat to herself - the more she lets anger guide her, the more likely she is to do something reckless and get herself hurt. She's seeing a therapist and working through her anger and trauma, learning how to recognize them for what they are instead of letting them control her. Her past has left her deeply cynical, which impacts her bleak sense of humor, but whenever she catches herself being too cynical she forces herself to try for a more positive attitude. She's trying to easy into a relaxing ordinary life, but constantly waiting for the other shoe to drop. She's going out of her way to make friends in and out of Lighthouse, in spite of her instincts telling her to keep other people at arm's length for fear of losing someone she cares about.

Faith is steadily trying to recapture that spark of hope for the future that she felt when she was younger. She's lost a lot - her best friend, her leg, her childhood years, her trust in the possibility of the world providing happy endings. She has a long way to go, but every day, the shadow hanging over her heart is a little fainter.

Character abilities:
As a mage, Faith's chief ability is control over her own intertia. She can, from moment to moment, adjust how easy or hard it is for her to accelerate. In practice, this means she can minimize her intertia in order to kick weightlessly off of a surface at great speed, then massively increase it in mid-leap, striking as if her mass was ten or twenty times higher than it is. This combined with the additional strength, speed and toughness granted by her transformation lets her deliver repeated attacks with incredible force at high speeds.

When not transformed, Faith has no particular powers. When transformed, she has a unique outfit and a battleaxe formed out of magical energy. Thanks to the upgraded added by Jailbreak, her prosthetic leg has durability to match her transformed stats, and she can compel it to float over to her with a spoken command. The command is "c'mere, leg".

Inventory:
- Purse (contains assorted junk)
- Cellphone (oldish model, 11% battery)
- Clothes (jean shorts, purple t-shirt, glasses)
- Magical girl outfit (only available when transformed)
- Battleaxe (only available when transformed)
- Prosthetic leg: Magically upgraded by her friend Jailbreak. She can order it to float over to her with a voice command, and it has a secret compartment in it for some reason.
- Spicy chicken gyro

Samples:
TDM

comments
